Branding and Spreading By: Adam Sparks
This past week I took it upon myself to spread our message and brand our group. After attending the Digital Frontiers conference at the University of North Texas a couple of weekends ago, I was enlightened on branding through using logos. It was essential that Remixing Rural Texas had a logo that was strong, simple, and represented the message. So, I was thinking about rural Northeast Texas (our focus location), and I was thinking about RRT’s message. Both of those factors HAD to be represented in our brand. Thus, I came across the idea of a windmill. The fan of the windmill has blades that come together to the middle. Each of these blades are essential and necessary for the windmill to work properly. For example, if you were to take a blade out of a ceiling fan, the fan would wobble, not work properly, and eventually break. Those properties are similar to a windmill. Without all of the blades, equally there, the windmill would fail. Thus, a windmill represents rural Texas, and the necessity of equality. The center point of the windmill, like a flower, holds the blades together. It looks as if several factors come together to create one windmill, one story. In our logo, each blade is a different color, but essential and has to work along with the other blades. The foundation is Remixing Rural Texas, as we are working to bring in these various elements to one story. It is a story that must be told.
Another factor that came out of the conference at UNT, was the use of social media to spread the wealth of information. I found this essential for RRT. Yes, we use Youtube and wordpress, but the world uses other major networks of communications as well. This led me to create the facebook, tumblr, and twitter pages. It is essential that we allow others to learn from us, as we learn from them. What we are doing at RRT is essential to the world of education, and that message needs to get out. Best part of all, these networks of communications are free of charge! So we needed to take advantage of the opportunity.
